    3d Screens question ^^

Sorry to bother people with this, as im sure hidden somewhere deep within the search function i could find topics of this nature previously discussed.

I have always wanted to know how to do this, i see them all the time.
Lets say i have 3DS Max, how would i go about this?
And yea, its safe to assume i have model viewer and altanaview.
Please help me out here ^^
    -thanks

    My routine is usually:

    - Setup model in ModelView, NOT AltanaView, since it doesn't support the export to .mqo
    - Export set to MQO
    - Open file in Metasequioa 3D Editor
    - Select all
    - CTRL+Q for Object Panel
    - Misc -> Merge All, so your model will be 1 mesh in 3DS Max. Makes it easier to move it around and rotate/scale/whatever it
    - Save it in Metasequioa
    - Import in 3DS Max
    - Do stuff
    - Render

I made the top two, and these :

Before I got repulsed by all mithras.

    for my SMN friend stu.

I had more after I learned about Alpha mapping, and I just realized I did the wrong model for stu. There's much better out there, the ones that were made by the guys who did Transworld Project.

I followed the tutorial on KI when I tried my hand at some Transworld imagery.

My PC kind of sucks, and I mostly design on my Macs, where my Adobe programs (and my tablet) live. I haven't done these in a while, mostly because file swapping between the 2 machines got old really quick.

I'd recommend looking at the KI tutorial. These were my first attempts:

Yeah, I actually went and sourced Stock Photography from istockphoto.com for the backgrounds. Its nice to have really hi-rez stuff to work with.

these are the fullsize files: (HUGE images)

the Transworld stuff is amazingly better than anything I've done though. Check it out here:

    - extract the models to some file format that your 3d application can read.

    - pose them on top of a grid and render it with final gathering / radiosity. all the same thing but different names depending on what app you're using.

    - for the grid/floor, make it constant white with some ambient occlusion so it darkens up where the character stands

    - put lights around the scene

    - click render to see how it looks with your lights. keep tweaking the lights til it looks the way you want

this is just one way to do it :3

for the models that are posed on top of photos, just make your lighting match the lighting in the photo, render it.. it renders with a alpha channel of the character so you can isolate it, put it on the picture in photoshop and shop it around til it looks the way you want it

Lots of the above are really cool, if you do anymore post em.

I love seeing this kind of stuff.

    I only wish FFXI looked as good in game ; ;

yeah, I'd followed Transworld for a long-time, I love checking the new images there - it's an amazing collection.

I've really thought about getting some better software so I can do more than my lame-o siggies. I'm assuming most of the stuff mentioned above costs a tad.

Blender (info) is a free, open source 3D modeling/animation suite, if you're looking for an alternative to 3ds.

I've never been able to find a way to convert the files to a format usable by Lightwave; is it possible? :/

I only did one other, but i could never get the perspective quite right, so I didn't post it >.>

    http://www.ancientcirclels.com/image...x860_green.jpg

(please refrain from the lolgrd and "OMG vrtra doeznt swan therr" comments... I've already heard them all the first time I showed this to anyone >.<)

I may try some of these later, but its hard to find the time to sometimes. They do look really cool when finished though.

A while ago I accidently dragged my ENTIRE ffxi images folder to my trash, and immediately emptied it (you know when your brain moves slower than your hands? People who know a lot of program shortcuts know what i'm talking about) and it deleted ALL of the layered files for these, as well as all my ffxi sigs i'd done work on. I kinda lost motivation after that.

Transworld (Sorry, I dont know the player's name) updates every couple of months though. Thats some inspiring work.
