How to download patch if your POL crashes

This latest file update crashed my pol, and others reported the same:

The crashing may be related to the recent POL Viewer update. It seems being persistent helps, keep trying till it downloads. Some have reported issues with their Antivirus(try disabling it), and some have reported issues with bad links to start POL(try running it straight from POL Viewer directory). Whichever ends up working many ppl report trying same thing over and over till it just miraculously works. Until we have more detailed information just keep trying.

Rebooting has also worked for some others.

Tried downloading this way, which seems to prevent POL from actually erroring out, but does not solve the POL-1155 problem that's preventing me from downloading FFXImain.dll.

Edit: just kidding. Completely crashing now. I guess I got lucky on the first few tries.

Same issue here, tried to run directly from pol folder as stated above, crashes on first file of download. Using Vista 32, usually have to "Run as Administrator" when i start game, tried this also on the pol.exe file itself. Still crashes. Halp !

Had the issue, was able to DL patch with your instructions, but the game still crashes on launch. Trying to reboot and install on other PC... (no apps/plugins whatsoever, using XP Pro).

Edit: Tried again and it worked.

Had the same issue, 1st 2 times it completely crashed my POL. Then for the next 2 after I restarted POL and tried to download that small update it stoped right away at 0% Installing files with the description "HDD probs were found". 3rd time it just installed the crap <.<;;; My guess is due to the big update some people got kicked out while downloading and they did't have to fully restart and just continued at the point they crashed. Well hopefully noone gets owned and has to reinstall everything

I had this problem until I just repeatedly kept restarting PoL to get the Update I now have the Update. I guess all thats involved is patients maybe?

Nope, still erroring out, every time it's right when POL begins checking files. I've tried it ten or so times now and it keeps doing the same exact thing.

Edit: Rebooting worked for me, finally.

I was wondering why my POL crashed when it started to do the update.

Afterwards, I got a POL-1154 error saying the files on my HDD were bad or something when trying to update. I ran a file check from the logon screen and it didn't find any problems and didn't fix the problem.

Fixed it by moving these files out of the FINAL FANTASY XI folder (to a temp folder) and launching PlayOnline Viewer (no windower and without the FFXI shortcut button on the main screen) and running the update again. It had to check all my files in the process. After it was done checking the files, it completed the update and fixed the problem. I deleted the temp folder with these files afterwards.

Tried the above, same issue with the crash :\

EDIT:

On the 5th attempt or so, it recreated the patch.cfg and patch2.cfg but skipped creating the above mentioned .tmp files. Checking files now, we'll see how it goes.

EDIT #2:

Reinstalled everything, basically. Now to spend an hour or two reapplying all my .dat mods >_>

Tried this, but my POL failed while checking files initially. Even after returning these items to the folder, I kept receiving some stupid fucking error about a background music file that's not installed. Now I'm being prompted to reinstall POL again. What the fuck is going on here?

I kept crashing (at least 10 times) until i disabled avast (switched from AVG cuz 8.0 sucks). Not sure if that's what was causing the problems, but it worked! so..

huh above poster was right, i disabled Avast and it worked first try for me after multiple crashes. From the sound of the issue i doubt everyone here is running avast, and different solutions work for different people, maybe this will work for a majority. Thanks for the tip.

I tried disabling my own antivirus and kept getting the POL1154.

My PoL crashed also, but i just kept trying, giving it like 5 minutes between every attempt..on like the 5th try it worked, didn't change anything...so maybe it's the luck of the draw? idk.
